What is Clinical Hypnotherapy?Hypnotherapy is a branch of psychotherapy. The difference being that psychotherapists deal with the conscious mind and clinical hypnotherapists deal with the unconscious. Our conscious mind makes sense of what is going on around us through what we see, hear, feel, taste and smell, it reacts to stimuli in both a positive and negative way. Our unconscious mind is rather like a storage system or computer, it stores all the memories and emotions that we encounter throughout our lives, some of these can be too painful for our conscious mind to deal with and so they become buried causing internal stress and trauma. It is often more productive to explore difficult, painful emotions and experiences through the unconscious mind.
Types of Hypnotherapy I specialize in:Clinical and Cognitive Hypnotherapy are both proven therapeutic aids, recognized by the medical profession as having real benefit to patients when often treatment and drugs have failed to help. In this respect they are both an art and a science. Clinical Hypnotherapy closely models psychodynamic therapy. This enables you to work on past issues as far back as childhood, resolve them and make peace with them and let them go. It can involve doing work with your inner child. This is the part of you as an adult that still feels anxious, vulnerable, angry etc that we often abandon. Cognitive Hypnotherapy is an evidence based model of hypnotherapy which enables me to challenge and help you change your model of the world. I do this through raising your awareness as to how you are causing your own emotional turmoil in the here and now through learnt patterns of negative thoughts, feelings and behavior. – See my HYPNO-CBT Page for further details. Ericksonian Hypnotherapy Milton Erickson is the master of modern day hypnotherapy, he introduced the concept of using metaphors and storytelling in order that the individual client can draw on and make sense of the story using thier own interpretation. His approach is what is known as ‘indirect’ Solution Focused Hypnotherapy The philosophy around this approach is that instead of spending hours focusing on the problem, talking about it, ruminating etc we instead focus on the solution, the end goal, what it is you want to change and how you will notice when you are there. Its a very direct, forward thinking approach that many clients and patients really get on very well with. Mindfulness Approach Hypnotherapy This is a great way of quietening the mind. Our minds are so active in today’s fast paced world that often our thoughts and emotional feelings are triggered as we slip back to the past or into the future so Mindfullness enables you to bring your attention into what you are experiencing right now in the moment in order that you can gain more clarity in your mind and calm down the physiology in your body. By using a combination of these approaches I can effectively help you to rewrite the chapters of your life so you see the same situation in a different way. I take a very client centered and psychoanalytical approach to helping you overcome your fears, phobias, anxieties etc. This means that each session will be tailor made to focus on your representation of the problem> Eriksonian Theory is that we all hold the key within us to overcome our problems, it is simply a case of tapping into that problem and tackling the root cause. A metaphoric analogy of this would be rather like if your garden looks very pretty because you have pulled up all the weeds from the surface, the problem however, still lies dormant and it will not be long until it (the weed) raises its ugly head again. The answer is to remove the ‘root’ of the problem, In order that it no longer bothers you.

Frequently asked questions:
Q.How does clinical hypnotherapy work?A. Simply put I use hypnosis to put you into a relaxed state of mind, this is often described as a natural state of altered awareness whereby our conscious mind can relax temporarily and our subconscious mind becomes more open to suggestion of change. All the hypnotic suggestions I make will be for your good towards your desired state of mind and body.
Q. How does clinical hypnotherapy differ from stage hypnosis?A. Stage hypnosis is done purely for entertainment. The volunteers know exactly what they are letting themselves in for. Clinical hypnotherapy is a proven therapeutic aid. No swinging pendulums, No ‘look into my eyes’ No turning you into a chicken, ever.
Q.What does it feel like to be hypnotized, will I be asleep?A. No you will not be asleep. You may however find yourself so deeply relaxed that you will drift into different levels of awareness.
Q. Can I get stuck in trance state?A. No, the worst thing that could happen is that you would fall asleep and awaken naturally once the therapy has stopped.
Q. Can I be made to do or say anything against my will?A. No, you remain in complete control at all times. Your conscious mind would not allow this to happen.
Q. How long does each session last?A. Sessions last for 50 minutes
